Dyes and Impressions of Lyon (TIL) - Textile industry
TIL is a historical player in the textile industry. Based in Villefranche-sur-Saône, TIL is the subsidiary specialized in printing and textile finishing of the Deveaux group, one of the leaders in the clothing textile market.

Context
The finishing operations carried out in the textile industry involve treatments are carried out to eliminate any risk to the environment. impurities or carry out colorations. These chemical treatments can be found in the natural environment that can cause significant damage.
Concerned about the environmental impact and aware of the need to comply with French and European regulations on the discharge of industrial water, TIL's teams wanted to invest in the development of a solution that would allow them to :
- to understand the efficiency of the treatment of its WWTP and to improve the management of the plant;
- to better characterize the effluents discharged into the natural environment and better preserve it;
- to transform the regulatory constraint into an opportunity for environmental quality certification.
In order to create a procedure for diverting water discharged into the natural environment into buffer basins, it was necessary to find a tool capable of detecting pollution peaks in real time. For this purpose, TIL's teams requested the services of ViewPoint, Biosurveillance de l'Eau.
ViewPoint's answer to Water Biomonitoring
A ToxMate biomonitoring station has been installed at the treatment outlet of the WWTP in order to improve the management of the wastewater treatment plant and reduce the environmental impact. ViewPoint has developed a new approach with ToxMate, its biomonitoring capable of detecting the presence of micropollutants in time real. This technology, co-developed with the ecotoxicology laboratory of INRAE Lyon, drifts continuously a part of the treated water to put it in contact with with three species of invertebrates that naturally populate European rivers. Their locomotor behavior is analyzed in real time by software of image processing and allows to warn instantaneously the managers of the water in case of an abnormal event of degradation of water quality, by presence of micropollutants.

The contribution of ToxMate to TIL
The predictive nature of the tool, and the wide detection range offered by the ToxMate solution are particularly well suited to the specificities of the textile industry, which has numerous treatment processes that require a permanent control.

Decision support
The ToxMate station makes it possible to carry out continuous controls, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, in order to track the micropollutants at the treatment outlet, to verify that the thresholds of toxicity are not exceeded and the treatments adapted.
The data provided online is reprocessed for immediate understanding and decision support. The alerts issued in case of presence of contaminants allow the rapid implementation of corrective actions

Steering tool
The data are historized for a posteriori interpretation to understand the recurrence factors and to classify the different types of events.
TIL is thus able to optimize the management of the WWTP and the treatments according to the production processes in use or the periodicity of pollution episodes.A predictive tool offering a wide range of detection, ToxMate is an integrative solution for optimizing the operation and costs of the WWTP.

Support for the maintenance of withdrawal authorizations
In August 2022, TIL is notified of a ban on groundwater withdrawals of the Saône, due to the dry period. The impact is significant for the company, as it means a halt in production.
Anxious not to put its hundred or so employees out of work, the director of TIL will present to the Prefecture a documented file showing that the 70 % of water discharged into the natural environment are controlled in real time by the ToxMate station. In case of detection of the presence of pollutants, a corrective action is implemented in a very short time.
Thanks to this voluntary approach to reduce the impact of its activities on the environment, TIL will obtain a derogation authorization and will be able to continue its activities, while preserving its jobs.
We are at your disposal for any information or study concerning the quality of your industrial effluents.
